  • On December 20, students at Crespo Elementary enjoyed a full day of Polar Express instructional activities with their teachers. Students had fun learning the TEKS while relaxing in their comfy pajamas. Students were treated to a performance of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Students also composed letters that were collected and delivered to Macy’s. For each letter received, Macy’s donated $1 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.<br />

Undaunted by 80-degree weather in December, the kids served up lots of creative variations of cocoa, including one topped with cocoa-dusted marshmallows, another flavored with a peppermint stick and crushed mint leaves straight from their garden, and a third infused with strawberry puree and topped with freeze-dried strawberries.<br />

  • Highland Heights students who were selected as a Student of the Week by their teachers between September and December were celebrated at a college-themed luncheon in their honor. Each student had a college place setting, dined on pizza, and made a special visit to a chocolate fountain to make chocolate-covered marshmallows.<br />

  • Hannah Martin, a seventh-grader at Johnston Middle School, won a silver medal for her submission in the School Days art contest sponsored by the Texas Renaissance Festival last fall. Her artwork,titled "Texas Unicorn," placed second out of 339 entries received from students across the state. It will be auctioned off to benefit Texas Children’s Hospital.<br />

  • Over 50 Helms ES students formed the all-star cast for the "Phineas and Ferb 17 Days of Christmas" bilingual musical held at Reagan High School. Family and friends joined us for this magical evening. In additional to the musical, fifth-graders in the Creative Media program premiered their "Colonization of America" movie.   • Principals, teachers, and other volunteers helped 2,000 of the district's neediest students through a community service project called Navidad en el Barrio, held Dec. 15 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. There, the students were treated to a free meal, entertainment, a special visit from "Pancho Claus," and the exciting arrival of Santa Claus, who rolled into the venue in style on a Harley Davidson, escorted by Houston police officers. Santa then distributed gifts to the children based on what they had wished for.<br />

The competition requires students to design and build a rocket that can be launched with water and compressed air.<br />

  • Students at Young Women’s College Preparatory Academy won the Science, Engineering, Communication, and Math Enhancement (SECME) competition.  The students competed in exercises using engineering concepts. The students built bridges, bottle rockets, and mousetrap cars among other items and they also learned how to write technical papers. They now will compete against other students in the region for a chance to represent Texas in the national competition. <br />

  • For the third consecutive year, female students at Patterson Elementary participated in the Girls on the Run 5K. Sponsored by teachers on campus, 20 students in third through fifth grades joined 500 girls from all over Houston at Cy-Fair’s Bear Creek Park to finish the race. Girls on the Run is a national association that educates female students in the areas of health and self esteem.<br />
