• Students at HISD’s Gregory-Lincoln Education Center raised $400 to support their school’s garden and culinary arts program by staging a clever fundraiser called “Cocoa for Kids” at the Montrose-location Whole Foods Market last month. Undaunted by 80-degree weather in December, the kids served up lots of creative variations of cocoa, including one topped with cocoa-dusted marshmallows, another flavored with a peppermint stick and crushed mint leaves straight from their garden, and a third infused with strawberry puree and topped with freeze-dried strawberries.
• Principals, teachers, and other volunteers helped 2,000 of the district's neediest students through a community service project called Navidad en el Barrio, held Dec. 15 at the George R. Brown Convention Center. There, the students were treated to a free meal, entertainment, a special visit from "Pancho Claus," and the exciting arrival of Santa Claus, who rolled into the venue in style on a Harley Davidson, escorted by Houston police officers. Santa then distributed gifts to the children based on what they had wished for.
Pictured from L-R are: Coop ES Principal Steve Guerrero, Berry ES Principal Debbie Silber, School Support Officer Rudy Treviño, Whittier ES instructional coordinator Patricia Ortiz, Berry ES Magnet coordinator Erin Chavez, Elementary Chief Schools Officer Samuel Sarabia, Whittier ES Principal Lori Lueptow, and Lantrip ES Principal Maggie Strickland.
